Books are not just for reading
You find a quiet space, you open that book and then you can be transported away from the day to day grind of life. As we know books can really help with our mental health, our connectivity and is a great way of coping through the darker months, be it winter, or just a difficult time in our lives.
Sally from Kingsholm has taken this a step further with her passion of books and seen an opportunity for others to connect, show care and kindness across Gloucester. Barmy about Books for children was then set up.
She has a real passion for children, (and adults), to read and see the benefits both individually but how connections/ friendships are made from meeting monthly to discuss that month’s Book.
Alongside this, Sally’s elderly parents have really struggled recently through Covid and been very ill and Sally has been supporting them, supporting her sister while managing a household of 6 herself. She is showing the kindness, love and care through this but also reaching out to others with her other local commitments she is involved in too.
Whether its a local venture, neighbour to neighbour support , low level small business type approach or creative idea , what we see is that opportunities for stories of kindness and Hope come to the forefront when ‘people’ are priority not ‘profit’. Sally has modelled this in all she does and the responses mirror that back.
Sally has been overwhelmed by the togetherness through the book club of virtual strangers.
“It has been so great to have people ask even how my parents are doing , when 3 weeks ago, I never met these people before. People are so kind and considerate and the book club has helped enable people’s openness and togetherness”
With 2021 just started, what are we giving ourselves to? Had enough already?, need a break?, need a bit of Hope?
Well as Sally shows , Keep going, keep reaching out, Keep smiling, keep showing Kindness & care and having Hope.
When we grab those opportunities to share life together with our neighbours and strangers, even through the Covid season, we’ll be encouraged by people’s genuine hearts and response. #GloucesterCan
