Elsie’s example
They used to have the shelters outside their houses along the street and Elsie, as a little girl, was always nervous but excited if they had to use them, alongside the other children of the street.
Elsie, despite Covid restrictions, is still going about her business when she can, in keeping the area clean, sweeping her street and chatting to the neighbours or people who pass through ( Allan the local town Cryer in picture).
What Elsie’s brief story shows us is that age is not a barrier or excuse for looking out for others and being actively proud of where we live.
Elsie has shown and still shows today that “GloucesterCan. Stay Safe, Stay healthy, but stay showing kindness with those around in different ways.
Elsie has lived in Barton and Tredworth for too many years to mention and still shows community spirit in all she does. Elsie shares,
“My mum brought me up to be helpful and look after where we lived, cleaning the streets was one of the tasks we had to learn and I’m still doing it at 94 !!”.
Elsie lived through the second world war in Gloucester and her Dad was one of the air raid wardens in Victoria Street. A little white painted circle outside the house marked who was one of the wardens and where the firewater was and the faint circle can still be seen today.
